Even without the ongoing emergencies in Gaza and in Afghanistan, the plight of hungry, displaced and abused children around the world is extreme.

Take hunger alone:

The land surface area of the world is just over 57 million square miles, and this has to feed a present population of 8.1 billion. This works out at 4.5 acres each, which is "right on the line" for the amount of land needed to grow food for one person for a year. So if the entire land surface of the earth was turned over to agriculture, we could all eat comfortably.

But....just a minute....

This land includes vast inhospitable regions such as Antarctica, the frozen wastes of Siberia and northern Canada, all the great deserts of the world, the great mountain ranges such as the Himalayas, essential rainforests.... and of course the cities we need to live in and the factory space required to make all that we need. All this land has to be subtracted from the total land area of the planet. Here is a link to a calculator for this: How Much Land Does It Take To Feed One Person - Online Calculator (permaculturism.com)

Clearly there isn't enough land to grow food for us all. Not even close.

Let's look at child abuse: All over the world children are being put to work for long hours in factories for little pay, when they should be at school learning things and bettering themselves, and many are forced into prostitution and trafficked across international borders for sex. Across all social, economic and geographical boundaries an estimated 10 per cent of girls and 6 per cent of boys under the age of 20 have been sexually abused. For physical abuse the figures are much higher.

Let's look at war: At present over one hundred million people worldwide are forcibly displaced by conflict, persecution and violence, and half of these are children. They have nowhere to live, nowhere to go and little to eat.

In such desperate situations as these, every penny helps.
