He married, on 15 Jan 1938, Evelyn May CROOKES ( 24 May 1914-20 Mar 1983) of Stocksbridge. The FIRTHs were traditionally coal miners, throughout the 19th century, but Cyril's knowledge of a trade (Carpentry and Joinery), and the presence of business acumen on his mother's side, enabled him to build his own timber business. Cyril FIRTH also fought in World War II, principally taking part in the allied landings in Italy and in the liberation of that country. Mary and Cyril lived all their married lives at Hole House Lane, (formerly Hoyle Houses Lane), Stocksbridge. Mary died in Nov 2000.  Their children. Photo of Mary MARSDEN and her mother Anne LOFTUS. Wilfrid DYSON served in World War II as an airman and flew on many bombing raids over Nazi Germany and its conquered territories. Shot down and taken prisoner, he was badly beaten by his captors, but this did not deter him from escaping. Making his way to the advancing Russians, he was at first mistaken by the Red Army for a German soldier and almost shot before they realized their mistake and then welcomed him. He died from cancer about 1950.  At one point, just after the war, Wilfrid and Norah were publicans in Stocksbridge. After his death Norah never remarried, but she had a number of relationships in sequence and may have been a serial monogamist. After living briefly in Scunthorpe she spent more or less the latter half of her life living in London, where she suffered a debilitating stroke in 1976  She died in November 2000. Alonzo and Lucy DYSON are buried together at Nanny Hill, Stocksbridge. Photos of Norah MARSDEN. Her children. Find the grave of Alonzo and Lucy DYSON.

She worked variously as a nurse and a shopkeeper. He was a regular soldier from 1938 to 1953. In World War II he served variously in Egypt and the Sudan, in Singapore, Burma and in India, and took part in the Allied invasion of Normandy (1944) and the subsequent campaigns in the northern European theatre of war as they fought their way towards Germany. After the war he was stationed with Kathleen in Army Married Quarters (in Neumunster near Hamburg) until 1953. Upon leaving the Army he became a steelworker at Fox's steelworks, Stocksbridge. Kathleen and Kenneth lived at Brownhill Row, Hunshelf, from 1953 to 1955 and then at Victoria Road, Stocksbridge until October 1969 when they moved to nearby Wortley village. Their children. He married, on 4 Sept 1948, Jessie Mary ROWLAND (born 31 Jul 1925) a local girl then of 22 Smithy Moor Lane, Stocksbridge. After the war Joseph became a Police Officer, beginning his career in Stocksbridge, before being promoted and posted as Station Sergeant at Silsden, near Bradford. This return to the Bradford area was the first since William LATHROPE and his wife Elizabeth BENDY first brought their branch of the family here from Devon in the 1820s. Joseph MARSDEN subsequently  became a Detective Sergeant in nearby Leeds, but left the Police force when in about 1970 he was wounded again, this time by armed robbers as he confronted them. He then moved to Woodlands, Doncaster, and worked as a watchman for the National Coal Board before starting a driving instruction business.
