1... Alice MARSH. Born 14 Apr 1865 at Brownhill Row (photo), Stocksbridge, Yorkshire, England, she was not Christened until 31 Jan 1878, at St. Mary's, Bolsterstone.  She married, on 20 Aug 1883 at St.George's church, Barnsley, England, Edward BARRETT, (born 12 Sep 1862 the son of John BARRETT and Hannah BRADBURY). Alice's grandfather Robert LATHROPE, who had emigrated to America in July 1868, loaned her $100 for she, her husband Edward BARRETT and their baby daughter Mary Jane BARRETT to join him in Utah in June 1885. They sailed on the City of Rome, from Liverpool via Queenstown to New York, which during the voyage, on the 25th May, after having dodged unprecedented numbers of icebergs over the Newfoundland Grand Banks, collided with the French fishing brig George Jeanne, sinking the brig with the loss of 22 lives and only 2 saved. Little Mary Jane caught measles on the voyage, from which she died shortly after arriving in Utah. By 1892 the couple had moved north from Ogden, Utah  into Idaho, where they first lived in a dugout (at Warm Creek, Bannock County) to protect themselves from the local Native American (Blackfoot) tribes. Later they owned a ranch in Pocatello, Idaho. Alice's marriage to Edward was not happy. Although she loved him, she hardly spoke to him in 30 years after he began to spend the greater part of his time living with a Native American "squaw" on the local Blackfoot reservation. Alice died 17 Sep 1948 at Albion, Cassia County, Idaho, U.S.A. and was buried there 3 days later on the 20th. Edward BARRETT died 20 Apr 1954 at Albion, Cassia, Idaho, U.S.A. and was buried there on the 23rd. Their children. Photo of Alice MARSH.  Photo of Edward BARRETT.
